The five derailment archetypes — Impostors, Rationalizers, Glory Seekers, Loners, Shooting Stars — felt like a precise taxonomy of people I’d actually encountered. The distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation as the hinge of authentic leadership is simple but clarifying: the goal isn’t to eliminate ambition, it’s to anchor it to something that won’t shift when you’re under pressure.
Why read it:
One of the more grounded leadership books I’ve read — less inspirational rhetoric, more structured self-examination. The questions it asks are the ones worth sitting with.
